How To Shift Negative Energy

Be gentle with yourself. 

Whatever you’re experiencing, whatever you’re going through, whatever you’ve set out to do, be gentle with yourself.

Growth comes from self-acceptance, self-forgiveness…and beginning again from a renewed energy of self-love, confidence and belief in yourself/what you’re setting out to do.

It doesn’t come from the harsh inner critic telling you you’ve somehow missed the mark and aren’t good enough and/or are deemed to fail.

There’s an adage that says “you cannot change what you first do not accept”.

The inability to acknowledge and accept your experience as it is keeps you stuck in the experience, thoughts and emotions.

Frustration is resistance to whatever is occurring in your experience, where resistance compounds the experience (and emotion) by moving it in the opposite direction you desire to move in.

So in times of frustration and self-doubt or any other emotion, thought or belief that’s not serving you, accept that that’s exactly what you’re experiencing in this moment.

This stops the situation from compounding and creates space for the energy to move in a new direction.

Once that space is created through acceptance of what’s occurring, forgive yourself for whatever you’re thinking about yourself in that moment that’s not serving you.

Forgiveness allows you to realign with a new position, regarding how you choose to see yourself and what you’re capable of doing (or feeling).

From this new position of having let go of whatever was causing frustration, resistance and disbelief, your energy can be harnessed in the direction you desire to move in.

The ability to reposition your energy is your power to change how you see yourself, your circumstances and what you’re capable of feeling, creating, doing and being.

You’re consciously shifting energy that was moving you in an undesirable direction to energy that has the potential to move you in a more desirable direction. 

This is your co-creative power.

And it’s one of the most useful skillsets you can develop and apply in your life.

Notice when you “miss the mark” and your inner critic wants to have a field day with telling you how “bad” you are.

Instead of going down the road of beating yourself up, practice accepting the moment as it is and subsequently forgiving whatever thoughts are arising.

It might look like: 

“Oh wow, my inner critic has kicked into gear. Interesting. It’s really taking root trying to say all kinds of unflattering things about me. Okay, I accept that my inner critic is doing its thing. I know whatever negative things it’s saying about me are not ultimately true so I forgive myself for thinking these thoughts.”

You’re moving from being 100% aligned with believing what your inner critic is saying to observing it from a neutral space.

When you feel you’re the observer and not actually at the mercy of those thoughts, you’re in a position to shift your energy by no longer coming from believing those thoughts mean anything about you and/or what you’re capable of being, doing, pursuing, having, etc.

You’ve created space to create a new experience through accepting what was occurring and forgiving anything you believed from what was occurring.

Now you’re in the perfect position to realign with thoughts, beliefs and actions that serve how you desire to see yourself and where you desire to go.

This is how you consciously harness your energy and direct it in accordance with how you desire to see yourself and where you desire to go.

People often feel powerless because they believe they’re at the mercy of their inner critic.

This process gives you power over your inner critic by no longer believing in it as an ultimate truth about you. 

It may take some time to get the hang of this process, especially if your inner critic is pretty loud.

But it’s possible to feel its power over you lessen and, ultimately, to no longer believe in it.

It just takes being gentle with yourself as you learn to apply these steps.

You’ll gain faith and momentum as you feel the space between you and your inner critic grow. 

You’ll feel it’s power diminish as this space grows.

And you’ll, ideally, feel more power and peace in your life. 

Power to move and create in the direction you desire to move in and a general underlying inner peace that stays with you, no matter if you’re pursuing something or not.

Note: You’re not repressing thoughts that don’t serve you. Instead, you’re looking directly at them in order to accept and forgive them. 

Toxic positivity occurs when you fear looking at these thoughts by pretending they’re not occurring in an attempt to keep a “positive game face” on. This is not serving you since the thoughts are still lurking in your energy having an effect on your experience. 

You have to address and shift the thoughts, ideas and beliefs that aren’t serving you, so they no longer have a bearing on the experience you’re creating. Avoiding them won’t accomplish this.

The steps in review:

Accept.

Forgive.

Reposition.

Begin Again.

Repeat as needed.

The day after writing this I had to apply these exact steps to a funky experience I was having. 

By the end of the day, things were moving in a much more desirable direction.
