One Simple Tool to Empower Your Perspective
One of the biggest things we can do to empower ourselves is to own our choices (and the mindset that led to those choices). When we fail to own our choices, we unconsciously write stories that paint ourselves as a victim to whatever is happening in our life. For instance:
If you don’t have as much money in your bank account as you’d like, own what led to that…
Did you opt out of the college route in order to pursue a dream that required you to work lower paying jobs in order to pursue said dream? Sweet…own it!
Did you leave a nice paying job to pursue your heart’s passion? Great…own it!
There’s nothing wrong with any of these decisions. The frustration comes when we forget to own our choices to be in this particular financial position.
The same can be said for the reverse situation…
Did you choose an 8:00-5:00 job that feeds your need for financial security, instead of pursuing a dream that involved more risk? That’s okay, too…just make sure you own your decision, so you don’t inadvertently write a story that paints yourself as the victim to this choice.
And remember, if you change your mind about any of the above decisions, own your new decision…and don’t feel guilty if it means subscribing to a new life philosophy (this can happen when we become identified with the philosophies that led to our original choices).
Even though I used examples that involve decisions around money, the same thought process applies to any decision you make in life. Here’s a personal example of mine…
I choose to do the necessary work to walk the higher path. A major part of my work is to fully let go of the fruits of my labor (no longer attaching to the results of what I put into the world / needing these results to be a certain way).
However, I still have a strong pull of ego to find security (and an identity) through sharing my work via the book, blog, etc…
When I don’t receive a result that feeds my ego’s desire for security (and identity), fear sets in (which is exactly what’s happening in the above scenarios with money).
Once fear takes root, I lose sight of my choice to embark on the higher path and I begin to write a story that paints me as the victim to my circumstances.
I fall into a bad habit of comparing where I am against others who are “making it” sharing similar spiritual teachings and wonder why my ability to help others isn’t being leveraged in a similar fashion.
When I’m consumed with all of this fear, I completely forget that I made a conscious choice to walk the higher-path…one that involves learning to let go of the fruits of my labor.
Instead of painting an empowering story—one that uses my circumstances as the catalyst for learning this lesson—I paint myself as the victim of these circumstances. This is how ego works…it uses fear to blind us to the choices we’ve made (or the lessons we’re here to learn).
Our job is to remember the conscious choices we’ve made and to become aware of the choices we made unconsciously. From here, we can own where we are, no matter what the circumstances are.
Now there are also some choices that we’ve made at the soul-level that tend to be hidden from our conscious awareness. If you’re willing to consider that we make choices at this level, as well, it adds another perspective and dimension to how we can view certain circumstances in our life.
Consider that you’ve entered this life with certain soul contracts…
You as a soul agreed to take on this specific three-dimensional reality (host body, family, circumstances, interests, etc.) to aid you in learning lessons that would further your development as a soul (and/or aid another soul in their development).
When seen from this perspective, we can open up to the soul-lessons that a specific situation is trying to teach us. In shifting our perspective from our myopic, three-dimensional perspective to that of our soul, we open up to many more reasons and possibilities for why something is occurring and what it’s trying to teach us.
As always, the trick is to maintain these perspectives when things start to go haywire. We do this by training ourselves to see differently. As we do this, the things we look at will change.
